life as a refugee
Rita should come ashore in 24 hours, and it looks like my apartment won't be completely flooded. I am, however, thinking there is a 50/50 chance it will be looted; there have already been reports of break-ins in Galveston. Since the storm is turning, I wouldn't mind driving back now (sans the wife, she doesn't like large storms) to defend whatever hasn't been stolen yet. Unfortunately, I doubt I could make back into the 'Dena until after the storm passes. That should be fun, as all the people who spent 10 hours driving to Austin will be taking the same route I am back to Houston. The wife and I now get to balance a desire to avoid a dozen hours in the car with the need to survey how much we still have left (and mitigate the losses if it all hasn't been stolen yet).
It's sad that I'm more worried about my criminal neighbors than the hurricane.

Looters may be willing to kill. Do you have anything worth dying for in that apartment? Console yourself with the knowledge that in a few years they will still be looting (or whatever) for a living while you will be able to replace those apartment contents many times over.
If you're reading this you better leave now. It's not bad on the freeways yet, but it's starting to get busy. Good luck!
Remember, Sam, you can't use deadly force to depend property. So, you're going to have to wait to use your arsenal. And let's face it, I doubt looters are really concerned with your apartment. They're down at the Wal-Mart.
I meant "defend" property, but I'm sure you knew that. Good luck driving home. Take the farm roads. That was my secret to getting to Austin in only 4 hours.
Actually, if I'm in my home deadly force would be allowed; a person is - as a matter of law - reasonably in fear of his life from a burgler (I don't know how to spell that word and I don't feel like opening Word to check my spelling).
I don't think I'll be home for a while. They mayor made a map telling when people should come hom; while all of you have a date between Sunday and Tuesday, Pasadena is in the "pending" zone along with Galveston. This is probably due to the fact that no one in the 'Dena has electricity yet.
