I hate Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is, at least in my opinion, is the most offensive day/festive period in the year. The day (which is now a week or three) is supposed to be in anticipation of Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Lent, the season before Easter, is the most solemn and holy part of the year for Roman Catholics. Somehow the holy period has been turned into an excuse for drunken debauchery; now I’m not opposed to drunken debauchery per se, I just don’t like using religious days as an excuse.

I would complain about the fact that so many partiers aren’t even Catholic, but I’m pretty sure the tradition started in Rome, so we’re to blame too. I just think celebrating the start of Lent by getting drunk and flashing people is like celebrating the Fourth of July by burning a flag and knocking off a liquor store.

Being a non-Catholic, I can't speak with any certainty about anything Catholic, but I'm going to anyway.
My understanding was that Fat Tuesday was like the Bachelor Party of the Church, with Lent being the wedding. The idea was that you got all the dirty evil stuff out of your system so that you could "handle" the 40 days of pious restraint.
As far as the rest of the stuff goes, I've never heard of college people needing an excuse to get drunk and make fools of themselves (especially when they could end up on video)...

I like the quota system of morality. If you actually do the whole fasting thing, you can break even, but I doubt your average girl gone wild does much (though people tend to be fairly sober for the next few days of going to class hungover).
